Route Description

Dog running in the woods

Lady Canning’s Plantation is an area of managed woodland next to Ringinglow village on the edge of Sheffield. It is enjoyed by dog walkers and mountain bikers alike, but the mountain bikers have their own tracks built into the woods, so don’t worry too much about them coming downhill. This walk is fairly flat and not very muddy, making it more accessible than some walks in the Peaks. There is a section of open moorland, where dogs should be on leads, but in the woods they are okay off lead. However, watch out for big groups of dogs being walked by professional dog walkers and also occasional deer!

The walk starts at a car park just off Sheephill Road, after leaving Ringinglow village. Enter the woods opposite the car park and follow the path. You will be looking for a smaller path going uphill to the left, but not the first one you see. Follow this path gently uphill, crossing a few intersections, until the path narrows and exits onto a wide farm track. Take a right through the gate to enter the open moorland part of the walk. Pooches should be on leads for this section. On a clear day you will have a good view of Sheffield to the left. Follow this wide sandy path until you reach a crossroad, at which point turn right and follow the track all the way up to another gate that re-enters Lady Canning’s Plantation. Dogs can be off lead again.

Walk along the track for a few hundred meters, with the trees on your right and the moorland on your left. Eventually there will be a combined gate, stile and dog entry on your right, going through here into the trees and over a cross section. Follow the path downhill, which will wind left and right a bit but eventually reaches the car park where you started.
