Route Description

Wyming Brook is a nature reserve on the way to Redmires Reservoirs, looked after by the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. It contains a variety of beautiful scenery, including waterfalls, trees, moors, wildlife and scenic views. There are many different walks you could do here but this one is flatter and more accessible. From 1st March to 31st July, dogs are required to be on a lead due to ground nesting birds, but as it is a nature reserve, I would recommend leads at all times.

This walk starts at the Wyming Brook car park, just off Redmires Road. It’s not a huge car park and fills up at the weekend, so arrive early or go during the week. While not part of this walk, you can go down from the car park to the stepping stones over the brook, where dogs can enjoy a good paddle. If you wanted to explore the Wyming Brook waterfalls, that would be the direction to go in, but that walk is very uneven and steep, so not ideal for everyone. Instead, exit the car park by going through the bike gate or over the horse blocks, then go up the hill immediately to your left.

This path winds through the trees for over a kilometer and you will frequently see the main track below and to your right (you will be walking back that way). The hill down to that track can be quite steep and there are occasional rocky outcroppings, so be cautious as you walk. Eventually you will reach a wooden sign with three directions on it. You should follow the path downhill and to your right, labelled ‘Wyming Brook Drive’ on the sign. This bit can be a little steep and muddy with an awkward ditch where it joins the main track.

You can now follow the main track to the right, which goes all the way back up to the car park. You will see lots of trees going up on your right and down on your left, with views in the distance of Rivelin Reservoir and Sheffield. You will notice some big gaps in the woods, where unfortunately a tree disease had to be managed by the forestry team.
